When the Body Says Slow Down

Three weeks ago, in a demanding rehearsal schedule, I felt a sharp pain in my Achilles and knew instantly — this was different. Old patterns would have pushed through:

  • “Don’t fall behind.”
  • “Be strong.”
  • “Ignore it and just keep going.”

But I’ve learned too much about my nervous system — and my worth — to go back to that.

I paused. I listened. I chose presence over performance.
And that changed everything.


The Nervous System Sets the Pace

Our bodies are wired for survival first, progress second. When we force, rush, or “power through,” the body shifts into protection mode. In that state, healing slows and tension rises.

But when we support the nervous system — through slowing down, breathing, grounding, and mindful pacing — the body begins to:

✔ release instead of brace
✔ integrate instead of resist
✔ heal instead of guard

Slow is not a setback. Slow is safety. Safety is what creates real, sustainable change.


A Mini Somatic Check-In 

Take 20 seconds with me:

  1. Notice — What sensation is present in your body right now?
  2. Name — Gently label it: tight, warm, fluttering, tense, spacious, dull, buzzy…
  3. Soften — Breathe into that area and release 5–10% of the effort there.

No forcing. No fixing. Just noticing and softening.

This is how the body learns to trust again.


What I Relearned Through Injury

By listening — truly listening — I began to heal faster, with less inflammation and more ease. Not because I pushed… but because I partnered with my nervous system instead of overpowering it.

This is the heart of embodied work.
